China Baidu, autonomous vehicle without steering wheel released Robotaxi practical use

Chinese Internet search giant Baidu unveiled a new autonomous vehicle (AV) with removable handles on the 21st of July and will launch an autonomous taxi (Robotaxi) service in China next year. The plan to put it into practical use was also revealed.

The cost per unit is 250,000 yuan ($ 37,031.55), which is lower than the previous generation's 480,000 yuan.

"This significant cost reduction will allow us to deploy tens of thousands of AVs across China," CEO Robin Li said at the Baidu World Championships.

This AV has a level 4 autonomous driving function that does not require human intervention and is equipped with eight riders (detection system) and 12 cameras. The manufacturer has not been disclosed.

According to the company, steering-wheelless vehicles will drive on public roads if approved by Chinese authorities. The driving ability of the new AV is said to be comparable to that of a skilled driver with more than 20 years of experience.
