China's video game industry loses sales for the first time, tightening authorities

China's video game industry sales have turned down for the first time since the start of statistics in 2008 in the first half of this year. The tightening of authorities has caused stagnation in the world's largest video game market.

According to the state-sponsored industry group "China Sound Image and Number Publishing Association," sales of the video game industry as a whole fell 1.8% to 147.7 billion yuan ($ 21.8 billion). The authorities have squeezed the number of new game approvals and tightened regulations such as limiting the time spent playing online games under the age of 18, which has hurt the growth of the market.

The number of domestic users also decreased for the first time from 666.57 million as of December last year to 665.69 million.

Domestic sales of Chinese game companies decreased by 4.25% to 124.5 billion yuan. Due to strict domestic regulations, companies are turning to overseas markets for growth, with overseas sales increasing 6.16% to about $ 9 billion.

Chinese authorities have suspended approval of new games for about nine months and resumed approval in April, but game software giants such as Tencent Holdings and Hong Kong NetEase have not yet obtained new approval. ..
