Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, who is visiting the United States, gave a lecture at the Institute for Strategic International Affairs (CSIS) in Washington on the afternoon of the 29th, saying, "Japan will play a greater role in maintaining the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region. I will do it.
Foreign Minister Hayashi explained, "The strategic balance of the region is becoming tighter for Japan and the United States." He pointed out that unilateral attempts to change the status quo are continuing in the East China Sea and the South China Sea, and that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are important.
On top of that, Foreign Minister Hayashi said, "We should insist that China follow the rules of the international community and fulfill its responsibilities as a major power in international problems".
"It is no exaggeration to say that Russia, which has invaded Ukraine, is deepening its military ties with China, and that it is becoming a security concern."
Foreign Minister Hayashi has announced that he will formulate a "FOIP plan for peace" by next spring in order to strengthen the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" concept advocated by Japan.
In a question and answer session after the lecture, he said he believed that he would have the opportunity to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) -related ministerial meeting in Cambodia next week.
