Monkeypox, "appropriate strategy" can prevent pandemic = WHO manager

World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary-General Tedros last weekend declared the viral infection "monkeypox" as an "internationally concerned public health emergency" "At this point, we still think that the outbreak of infection can be stopped by using the right strategy for the right population," a monkeypox executive told reporters yesterday.

However, he warned that he would run out of time if he did his best, arguing that "everyone needs to work together to take appropriate action." He also pointed out that WHO is working on determining the mechanism of global cooperation and is currently in discussion.

Since the beginning of this year, monkeypox has been reported to infect more than 16,000 people in more than 75 countries. The executive said the actual number of infected people would probably exceed this.
